Song Deconstruction: Rolling in the Deep by Adele and Andrew Fowler

Rolling in the Deep: Adele

Rolling in the Deep (cover): Andrew Fowler

Rolling in the Deep by Adele and the cover of her song by Andrew Fowler share many similarities while still having differences. A major difference is the singer. Adele's song is song by a girl with backup vocals also done with female voices. The cover song is sung by a boy with backup vocals being male. This difference creates a change in pitch. Adele has a slightly higher pitch then Fowler. The timbre is also different because Adele uses many instruments that create a complexity that Fowler doesn't match. He uses a more simple timber.  Rhythm is kept in a different way for each song. Adele uses a guitar in the beginning of her song and Fowler utilizes a single drum beat.
Instrumentation is another huge difference. Adele uses many instruments that have a nice layering affect that create an intense mood to the song. Fowler uses voice, one drum beat, and clapping. This creates a different type of mood but still has a layering effect that works very nicely.
While the songs have major differences, there are still a lot of similarities. The melody is the same for both Adele and Fowler as it uses the same catchy tune. Also, both songs have a lot of depth as each uses a style of layering. Adele's layering with instruments and Fowler with backup vocals. The speed of each song is also similar as it goes at a medium pace. Intensity is another commonality between the two songs. It goes from a softer to louder intensity for both songs that creates a similar frequency.  The way both songs are organized is also similar because the same lyrics and melody are used. This gives a nice order with the same pattern. The pattern for both begins soft with a low frequency that slow gains in speed and intensity with a higher frequency. Then after the climax the song goes back to down to a less complex timbre.
Overall I think that both versions of the song are well done and have a lot of layering that is pleasant to hear. Adele uses more instruments which I really like because it creates more of a depth than the depth that is created just by Fowler's vocals. The complex timbre to her song is also really appealing. Even though she did a great job, I like the cover version Fowler did better. I find it amazing that he utilized his voice by singing the background where instruments would have been. The simple timbre in his version of the song shows how talented he is with just his voice and I like that. Not only do I think it is awesome that he did each part of the song by his voice but I like the harmony being in a male pitch. His lower voice is more easy on my ears and another reason why I like his version of the song Rolling in the Deep better.
